If a particular page on a website does not load for some reason or if a link is not working, the visitor shall see an error page with a generic message. The page shall have nothing in common with the rest of the site, which could make the visitor leave the site. A likely solution in this case is a feature offered by some hosting companies - the option to set your own personalized error pages which shall have the same design and style as your Internet site and that may contain any images or text that you would like based on the particular error. There are 4 standard errors that may take place and they involve these so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it can't be processed; 401, if you are supposed to log in to see a web page, but you haven't done this yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to view a specific page; and 404, if a link that you have clicked leads to a file that doesn't exist. In all of these cases, site visitors will be able to see your custom made content rather than a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Cloud Hosting

The customized error pages feature is provided with each cloud hosting package we offer and you will be able to replace all the generic pages with your own with no more than a couple of clicks from your Hepsia hosting Control Panel. You will need to produce the actual files and to upload them to your account, then to set them for a particular domain or subdomain through the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel. You can easily do this for each and every website hosted in the account individually, so that every set of personalized pages will have the same design and style as the website it is part of. If necessary, you may always revert back to a default page from our system or to the default Apache server page. A different way to set personalized error pages is to create an .htaccess file in the domain/subdomain root folder and to include a few lines in it. If you haven't done this before, you may simply copy the necessary program code from our Help article about this.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

Our Linux semi-dedicated plans support custom made error pages, thus you'll be able to employ this function for each and every domain or subdomain hosted in your account. All it will take to do this is to navigate to the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel, to click on the Edit button associated with the specific domain/subdomain and to type in the link to the custom-made file. You could do this separately for each and every error type. You'll be able to switch back to a default error page whenever you want if needed and the change shall take effect right away. Another way to get the exact same result is to set an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the website that you'd like to change and to input a few lines of program code inside it. If you would like to try this method, you can copy and paste the necessary code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, hence you will not need any computer programming skills or previous experience.
